Music

SELECTED ITEMS FROM OUR COLLECTION
Music, 1900--

Manuscript full scores and parts, piano vocal scores, sides, librettos, and chorus books for over 600 shows.  The full scores are often in the hand of their original arranger and give musicologists, researchers and members of the general public a sense of what Broadway sounded like in the era before "original cast albums."  While the music collection is mainly from Shubert productions, the range of materials is noteworthy.  Among composers and lyricists represented are Harold Arlen, Reginald de Koven, Vernon Duke, Rudolf Friml, Ira Gershwin, E.Y. Harburg, Victor Herbert, Emmerich Kahlman, Gus Kahn, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Sigmund Romberg, Harry B. Smith, Oscar Straus, P.G. Wodehouse, Benny Anderson & Björn Ulvaeus, Stephen Flaherty & Lynn Ahrens, and Michel Legrand.  Shows include:  Artists and Models; Blossom Time; The Chocolate Soldier; The Firefly; Gay Divorcee; Life Begins at 8:40; Love O’Mike; Oh, I Say!; The Passing Shows; Rose Marie; The Student Prince; You Never Know; Ziegfeld Follies (1934 and on), Big Deal (1986), Jerome Robbins’ Broadway (1989), Once on This Island (1990), Amour (2002), and many more. Also housed in the music collection are published scores and sheet music.
